Jake Purcell is a Marine Corps veteran of WWII and Korea, but none of the personal harrowing tragedies he faced in combat compares to what is suddenly thrust upon him on Christmas Eve 1954. His brother Alonzo, his brother's French wife Anna and one of their twin sons, Lorenzo, are killed in an automobile accident. Jake, an unmarried police sergeant with no intention of starting a family, must now become guardian to his only surviving nephew, six-year-old Luke.
Alonzo had told Jake in the past that all of Anna's relatives had been killed in Paris in WWII. But as Jake and his sisters sift through Alonzo and Anna's estate following their deaths, they find a photograph of Anna with a woman they do not know and letters with a Montreal postmark. When Jake is finally able to contact the woman, he discovers the truth about Anna's past and why his brother and sister-in-law kept the dark secret to themselves.
Taking place over a decade in 1950's Albuquerque, Montreal and Paris, JAKE is a novel of personal struggle and how the ties of blood hold a family together.
